Functional Materials and Manufacturing Institute

About the FMMI REU

The primary objective of this REU project is to cultivate engineering innovation skills in participants by challenging them to conceive functional materials and their structures, and methods for processing them to perform targeted engineering functions. The science of functional materials, especially, nano-materials and hybrid composite materials, has advanced substantially in recent years.

The goal of of this REU project is to provide research opportunities to undergraduates to allow exploration of such reproducible, scalable, and economically viable processes using interdisciplinary engineering approaches within the vast resources of the common facilities available at the Functional Materials & Manufacturing Institute (FMMI).

In addition to research component of the program, activities will be planned for students to improve their communication skills and there will be an opportunity for graduate students to mentor an undergraduate. Off-campus field trips (i.e. NASA) are also planned to enhance the experience for our students.
