Functional Materials and Manufacturing Institute

About the FMMI RET

The Functional Materials and Manufacturing Institute have been offering research opportunities to community college, high school, and pre-service STEM teachers. The program has the theme of Functional Materials and is funded by the National Science Foundation as a Research Experience for Teachers (RET) site.

Selected teachers will get the opportunity to:

• Participate in materials-related research with USF engineering faculty

• Attend seminars, and classes

• Acquire oral and written presentation skills

• Learn how to conduct independent research

• Develop a curriculum for their students based on this research experience

It is an incredible opportunity with benefits to students and teachers alike. Furthermore, getting a research opportunity in materials science is highly interdisciplinary because with requires support from a variety of different scientific, mathematical, and engineering disciplines.

Testimonials:

"This program allowed for me to bring my research experience into my classroom. It also gave me the opportunity to interact and learn from my fellow teachers that I would not have had the chance to meet otherwise." -- 2017 RET Teacher

"I was able to take part in research experience that I can bring back to the classroom to promote STEM careers." -- 2017 RET Teacher

"Having the opportunity to get to know other STEM teachers from a variety of schools over such a long period of time simply cannot be found elsewhere. Getting to know these teachers and then being able to see their lesson plan ideas at the end of the program has had a big impact on me as a teacher. Please keep this opportunity funded. I will recommend it to all of my professional colleagues." -- 2016 RET Teacher

"As a teacher, I am able to bring back personal experience and knowledge about the STEM field to my students. Having the students from King High School is an experience that goes above and beyond. I learned how to guide my students to entering the science fair. This program is amazing and I hope to encourage all of my students to be knowledgeable about STEM fields."
